Abstract
The ultrastructure of experimental hepatocellular carcinoma has been well documented but a few papers have dealt with the hepatoma of man¢¥-5¢¥.
The present paper consists of a detailed morphological study of human hepatocellular carcinoma and experimental hepatocellular carcinoma in rata, and also compares them.
Three specimens of human primary hepatic carcinoma examined electron microscopically revealed abnormalities of cytoplasmic components. Mitochondria showed marked reductions in number and size. The shape of mitochondria was very irregular, and the cristae disappeared markedly. Rough endoplasmic reticulum was normal and smooth endoplasmic reticulum showed mild pleomorphism. Nuclear membranes, Nuclei, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes and chromatin were ultra. structurally normal.
The experimental hepatocellular carcinoma in rats was induced with nitrosohexamethylenamine and dimethylnitrosamine after administration of 28 weeks and 26 weeks orally. The characteristic changes of ultrastructure of experimental hepatocellular carcinoma in rats is the nuclear and nucleolar changes. The nuclei and nucleoli were enlarged and nuclear membrane was irregular. The nucleolar material segregations was noted partly. Rough endoplasmic reticulum was markedly dilated. Mitochondrial changes were marked in both groups. Smooth endoplasr-nic reticulum was vesiculated and hyperplastic.
According to a report of Hruban et al. (1965)15¢¥ and our results, it is suggested that the ultrastructure of human hepatocellular carcinoma is similar to that of the rapid growing experimental hepatocellular carcinoma in rats.
